Religious Explorations for Sunday, February 26, 2012

Welcome to the Religious Education and Explorations Program of the First Unitarian Church of Honolulu.

On Sundays, child care for those Two and Under is available at 10:10 in Room #5 upstairs.  Phyllis Keohohou and trained assistants amuse and are amused by our youngest participants.  Parents are welcome to stay with their children, or to have their little ones with them in the sanctuary during the service.

Children over Three join their families in the Sanctuary for the first part of the Sunday service.  Following the first part of the service, children in the Pre K - Kindergarten Class, and in the Lower and Upper Elementary Classes proceed with their teachers to Room #1 for the RE Opening Circle.

And then, to their respective classes.  Children in Sylvia Himeda's Pre Kindergarten class are learning about building relationships.  The Elementary Classes complete their studies of Stories from the Hebrew Bible this Sunday, February 26.  Parents and others are invited to join us for our Closing Circle at 11:20, where we talk about the morning's lessons.

Parents, please meet your children at 11:30, at the end of the RE Program, in Room #1.  As part of our Safe Congregation program, children may only leave the RE program in the company of a parent or another designated adult.  Thanks to all those parents who joined us for the RE circle last Sunday.  We rely on you.

Sunday, February  25:  The Story of Daniel, from the Hebrew Bible.

Sunday, March 4:  Introduction to Islam

Sunday, March 11:  The Prophets, from Judaism, Christianity and Islam

Sunday, March 18:  Muslim Prayer, and the Story of Muhammad, peace be with him.

Sunday, March 25:  Learning more about Islam and our world.

Saturday, March 31:  Teachers' meeting 2 - 5 p.m. to review and retune the Elementary Program.  All are welcome, especially those adults interested in helping with the RE Program.

Sunday, April 1:  Arabic and Islamic Art

On Sunday, April 8, Easter, we move to two Services.  We will offer Child Care only at the 9 a.m. Service, and child care plus the Religious Education Program at the 11 a.m. Service.  On Easter Sunday we will have our 'traditional' Easter can hunt [cans of food then donated to the Hawaii Food Bank], and Easter Egg Salad Lunch.

Our Religious Education program for Elementary School children and for our Youth Group will focus on Islam during March, April and May.  We will be learning about the Five Pillars of Islam, life in different parts of the Islamic World, and going on some field trips.

At the moment we are short on Teachers for our Elementary Classes.  On March 4, and thereafter, we will combine the Lower and Upper Elementary Classes, for our program on Islam.  When we have additional teachers, we will be able to divide the classes again.

On March 4, 11 and 18,  Nan  will be in the Philippines, visiting the Unitarian Universalist churches there with Jonipher.   Lisa Wong Jacobs is the RE Coordinator during Nan's absence.  Please welcome Lisa, and direct questions to her.
