Traditional and unique ways to bring images into the surface of paper,
each artist working with various methods of subtraction and addition.
Four completely different approaches, but with a very common denominator.
Each artist works as if their health and life depends on it,
and when you get to know them you know it is true.
Each artist is emerging, rising to the surface, and survives through
their vehicle of expression....marks on paper.

PRINT + COLOR + WATER
ARTWORKS BY STEPHANIE PIEROBELLO AND NICOLE TESTA-MARA
The Gallery on the Pali features an exhibit of two local artists Stephanie Pierobello and Nicole Testa-Mara called “Print + Color + Water”. This two-person exhibit is composed of Pierobello’s watercolor paintings and Testa-Mara’s silkscreen prints. The exhibition will run from April 24 - May 19th. The public is invited to the OPENING RECEPTION Saturday April 23rd from 4PM to 6PM.
These two artists look to their beautiful surroundings for subject matter and inspiration. Nicole Testa-Mara uses a combination of photographic images of landscapes and flora and transposes drawings of black mask like faces over them. Her inspiration is taken from her experiences and travels to New York, Hawaii, Alaska, Palau, Vancouver, and Bali. Testa-Mara, who is an art therapist as well as an artist, sees the face as the holding space of many powerful emotions.
Stephanie Pierobello’s work is primarily watercolor painting and colored pencil drawings. The artist’s use of vibrant color, and the juxtaposition of her subject matter, creates inventive art works that reflect her deep love for Hawaii. Stephanie has lived in Hawaii for over thirty-one years and teaches fine art to middle school students in Honolulu.
Both artists work with the students of Dole Middle School where their work with is seen as instrumental in students’ academic success as well as prize-winning art work. Their students’ work is currently receiving rave reviews in its exhibition at the Gallery on the Pali through April 21st.

Re: “Art Leaves No Student Behind” Dole Middle School Student Art Exhibition
The Gallery on the Pali and the Dole Middle School are delighted to announce two sequential shows supporting arts education. Recognizing the vital role of Art in a healthy, growing community, the First Unitarian Church has, for almost 50 years, supported the Gallery on the Pali. The Gallery joins with the Dole Middle School to assert and show evidence of the value of Arts education in the success of our children.
"Art Leaves No Child Behind”, displays works by Art Students from the school from March 27 - April 21, 2011. The public is invited to the OPENING RECEPTION Monday, March 28, 5-7 pm to celebrate the students’ work and the Kalihi school’s phenomenal success in integrating art into its education program.
The second exhibition, “Print + Color + Water” by teacher Stephanie Pierobello and Art Therapist Nicole Testa will run from April 24 - May 19th with a reception April 23rd. Join us to see and celebrate the works of the teachers who inspire the Dole Middle School students.
Come witness the impact of art education and expression on students at a time when many art programs have been cancelled for lack of funds. In spite of budget constraints, Dole Middle School, with over 70% of students enrolled at the school receive free or reduced lunches, has maintained its art program, and its students have won 8 statewide awards over the past 5 years. Only 14 schools across the nation earned the 2010 "School of Distinction" title from the National College For Every Student Program, and Dole Middle is the one Hawaii middle school to earn it. Dole Middle School has devoted resources to the arts against all odds as other schools have succumbed to pressure to close arts programs in favor of math and reading support. The school has successfully built its arts program for over 30 years for the benefit of its students.
The Gallery on the Pali at the First Unitarian Church is honored to host this exhibition. Please email Deborah@learningbond.com for details.
