Habitat for Humanity

Convener:  Gene Parola

Ours is a "Covenant Church" with Habitat for Humanity.

Church volunteers gather to help Habitat on the construction of new homes and to provide lunch for construction volunteers.

Honolulu Habitat for Humanity

Honolulu Habitat for Humanity is a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, with its own 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. Honolulu Habitat was founded in 1988 and has completed 64 homes since then.  We have recently completed our 65th home in Waialua, our first on the North Shore, and are planning our Dedication ceremony.

In April 2011, we will be beginning two homes, a four-bedroom home in Papakolea and a two-bedroom home in Waimanalo.

Where do we build?

Honolulu Habitat builds all over Oahu, with the exception of the Leeward Coast (from Kunia to Makaha).  We build on Hawaiian Homelands as well as lands owned by families.

What are Habitat houses like?

Habitat houses are all built according to the same guiding principles.  Habitat houses are:

Simple.  Habitat houses are modestly sized — large enough for the homeowner family’s needs,  but small enough to keep construction and maintenance to a minimum.

Decent. Habitat uses quality building materials to meet all required building codes.

Affordable. The labor of volunteers and partner families, modest house sizes, and a no-profit, no-interest loan make it affordable for low-income families to purchase a house.

All of the homes Honolulu Habitat builds are Energy Star qualified.
